About the OEM Factory Air Conditioning System Originally Installed on the 1964 Grand Prix
AC System Type: | Expansion & Suction Throttling Valve (STV)/Filter-drier/Electric & Vacuum controls. No safety switch in this factory system, which relied instead on discharge outlet on A6 compressor. |

Grand Prix background and what was new in 1964
The Grand Prix as a model
The Pontiac Grand Prix was first introduced in 1962 as Pontiac’s answer to the Ford Thunderbird, slotted as a luxury, performance, mid-size car, between the larger Bonneville and the smaller Tempest in the Pontiac lineup.
The 1964 Grand Prix in context
The 1964 Grand Prix was the third of the B-body based 1st Generation (1962-1968). The long, low, clean, wide look of the 1st Gen’s was a break from the bulkier, heavily chromed, larger tailfin cars of the 50’s.
64 vs 63 Front
The vertical dual headlights and the “eyebrow” lip remained. However, the horizontal front grille bar was eliminated and the grille cavity appeared more reduced and recessed. A “GP” logo was also added to the grille.
64 vs 63 Side
The side panels remained very similar to those on the 1963 Grand Prix.
64 vs 63 Rear
On the 1964 Grand Prix, the ends of the rear of the fenders became more vertical and the deck angled more, folding down at the rear.
