1975 Grand Prix Compressor Upgrade Kit

Part #: 23-603 $499.99

Get this Kit when you'd rather upgrade than keep your 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix original and you are confident your evaporator, condenser, liquid hoses and pulleys are all working properly (call or email, we can help you figure this out).

1975 Pontiac Grand Prix Compressor Upgrade Kit

Advantages of our 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix Compressor Upgrade Kit

  • Lighter, smaller, modern, more efficient compressor
  • Half the weight and bulk of stock A6 compressor
  • Less horsepower drag, better fuel economy & performance
  • 6,000 RPM continuous duty rating
  • Eliminates rumble, vibration and belt slap
  • Clean & attractive under-hood appearance
  • Easy to install
  • Great for converting to 134a refrigerant.
    More on converting to 134a.

1975 Pontiac Grand Prix Compressor Upgrade Kit Includes

  • Modern, rotary compressor
  • Compressor mount brackets
  • Suction (from Compressor to VIR) and Discharge (from Compressor to top fitting on Condenser) Compressor hoses (Supplied with one end open on each, along with appropriate ends or hose openings. Trim to fit and either clamp or crimp new fittings on locally or send to us and we'll crimp and return them for free)
  • O-rings
  • Hardware
  • VIR Rebuild Kit w dessicant bag (If converting to 134a Refrigerant, consider our VIR Eliminator Kit)
  • All the tech support you need

Essentially everything air conditioning related in the engine compartment except for evaporator, liquid hoses, pulleys, condenser, safety switch, and VIR.

The factory system did not have a safety switch, relying instead on a discharge outlet on the stock A6 compressor. The compressor included with this kit does not have a discharge outlet and so we strongly recommend adding a 1975 Safety Switch.

We recommend that as part of your air conditioning system repair, you convert to a 134a refrigerant system although that is not required. If you do convert to 134a, we recommend our VIR Eliminator Kit.

The VIR (Valves-in-Receiver) combines the Expansion Valve, POA Valve and accumulator (which substitutes for the Filter-Drier) in one valve. On the 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix’s, the VIR is mounted to the Evaporator unit on the passenger side firewall.

While the VIR systems function well with the old R12 refrigerant they were designed for, the inability to adjust their calibration makes them marginal at best for use with 134a refrigerant. Our VIR Eliminator Kit replaces the VIR with the Accumulator equipped cycling-clutch-orifice-tube (CCOT) used on modern GM vehicles.

IF CONVERTING FROM 134a, THE FOLLOWING IS RECOMMENDED IN ADDITION TO THIS KIT:

  • Flush all re-used system components to insure they are clean & free of contaminants. This may be performed simply by blowing the system components out with compressed air, but depending on component condition, might require liquid flushing with approved flushing agent. It is highly recommended that this is performed component by component. Feel free to email with any questions!
  • Replace or restore all rubber hoses with barrier-lined hoses, unless current hoses have already been changed.
  • Install 134a charge port adapters.
  • Change dessicant in VIR. Rebuilding the VIR is recommended. We can do this for you.

1975 Grand Prix Condenser

Parallel Flow Condenser

The Condenser on a factory air 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix is the radiator-like device mounted in front of the radiator in the engine compartment.

The factory air Condenser in a 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix was a tube and fin Condenser.

We offer reconditioning services for your original 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix Condenser. We can even make a new one using your original as a sample. Give us a call or email and let’s discuss the best options for your situation.

A/C INFO:

Car air conditioning is nothing more than continuous heat transfer by two heat exchangers. One heat exchanger, the Evaporator, absorbs heat from the passenger compartment. The other heat exchanger, the Condenser, dissipates that heat into the outside air. All other things being equal, size matters. A larger Evaporator and a larger Condenser exchange more heat than smaller ones and allow the air conditioning system to cool better.

CONDENSER MAINTENANCE TIP:

Try to keep your Condenser as clean and free of bugs and debris as possible. The Condenser's ability to transfer heat is based on air flow. When the Condenser air flow becomes obstructed, it becomes a less efficient heat exchanger.

1975 Grand Prix Evaporator

1975 Pontiac Grand Prix Type Evaporator

The term “Evaporator” is often used loosely to refer to the Evaporator box or housing and also to the Evaporator coil, which is a boxier, radiator like device located inside the Evaporator housing. On a factory air 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix, the Evaporator housing is located in the engine compartment on the passenger side firewall.

We offer reconditioning and rebuilding services for your original 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix Evaporator. Give us a call or email and let’s discuss your situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I convert my air conditioning system to 134a refrigerant in connection with a Compressor Upgrade Kit or Compressor Upgrade Kit PLUS ?

Yes. We recommend converting to 134a in connection with any air conditioning system repair and most folks do. You'll already be changing out most of the parts required for a 134a conversion, 134a gives good performance, and R12 is no longer available on a retail basis. We can explain when you call and help you through the process. More on converting GM vehicles to 134a.

Does the Compressor Upgrade Kit PLUS cover everything that contains refrigerant in my 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix air conditioning system?

This kit contains everything that contains refrigerant in your ac system except the safety switch (which we recommend adding but is not required). See the safety switch issues covered in the 1975 Pontiac Grand Prix Compressor Upgrade Kit section above.

This kit also does not cover your factory controls, your dash vents, or the duct hose that goes from the evaporator to the dash vents. If you have an issue with any of these items, we may be able to help. Call or email us.
