Street Rod Coolers

How To Select The Components For Your System

A complete Street Rod system consists of the following:

  1. Evaporator Kit
  2. Condenser
  3. Compressor
  4. Compressor Mount Kit
  5. Hose Kit

Evaporator Kit

Our Evaporator unit is designed to go in the dash. Decide exactly where you want to put it and make sure it will fit. The dimensions of our Street Rod Cooler units are:

  • Street Rod Cooler II: 20” long x 7⅛” wide x 9” high
  • Deluxe: 23” long x 11” wide x 10” high

Since each street rod has unique characteristics under the dash, we must rely on you to tell us what will fit in your application. If you are unsure, create a cardboard mockup. If it fits, the unit should. Don’t forget to consider hose/duct placement. If your Street Rod already has defrost ducts, our Evaporator unit can be adapted to them. If you don’t have defrost ducts or yours are old or broken, you can use the ones we provide.

An Electric Control Evaporator Kit typically includes:

  • Evaporator case, which houses an air conditioning coil, a heater coil, and a blower assembly
  • Control panel
  • Complete wiring harness
  • 4 Standard air vents
  • 2 Standard defrost ducts
  • 2” Diameter flexible duct hose
  • Heater control valve
  • 3 Speed blower switch (built into Electric control)
  • Remote heat dump (1 on the Street Rod Cooler II, 2 on the Street Rod Cooler Deluxe)
  • Mounting hardware
  • Templates for installation

Condenser

The Condenser should be sized according to the area in front of the radiator and the opening in the radiator core support. You want to select the condenser that will cover the largest amount of the fin area in front of the radiator. Give us a call, we'll help you figure it out.

You’ll need an engine fan. If you don't have one or have only a 4 blade fan, we strongly recommend that you upgrade to a 6 blade fan. Give us a call to discuss. In some cases you may need to updgrade to an electric fan.

Compressor

We use Sanden-style, universal type compressors. We offer two main drive types depending on your application. If you are using a March Performance of Billet Specialties type compressor mount kit, you'll need a multi-groove, serpentine drive type. Otherwise, you'll generally need a V belt drive type. Generally our customers use a top exit outlet configuration but if you have a low hood line, you may need a rear exit outlet configuration. Chrome and polished finish upgrades are available.

Be sure you have the correct pulleys to drive the Compressor. Give us a call; we can help you figure it out. If you end up needing pulleys, we have a complete line available in several different finishes.

Compressor Mount Kit

Depends on your engine We have compressor mount kits for the most common engines.

A Compressor Mount Kit typically includes: Brackets to mount Compressor to engine, mounting hardware and in some instances pulleys. Call for details.

We also carry a complete line of upgraded compressor mounting kits from manufacturers like Billet Specialties, Bill's Brackets and more.

For a more consistent look, we also carry matching alternator and power steering kits.

Hose Kit

We offer a variety of universal Hose Kits depending on your application. Our most common is a traditional kit with various lengths of three hose sizes, fittings, tie down clamps, Condenser mounting brackets, a filter-drier with mounting hardware, O-ring assortment kit, and safety switch (to regulate system pressure). We also offer a trunk kit and an R12 kit. The hoses will be of various lengths. You will need to cut the hoses to length, determine the proper fitting orientation and then crimp the fittings. Usually a local parts supplier or air conditioning shop will crimp the fittings for a small fee. If you can't locate someone in your area, you can send them to us and we will crimp them for you.

For a slick look, we also offer an upgrade to beautiful stainless braid hoses with polished fittings.

Top it off by upgrading to a chrome drier.
