The Mustang is 49!

Wednesday, April 17th, 2013

1964 and a half MustangApril 17 marks the 49th anniversary of the introduction of the Ford Mustang.  More than a million of them were sold in the first 24 months — still the record for the most successful new car introduction.

The first Mustangs are technically referred to as 1964 1/2 because they were released in the spring, when there was less competition from the usual fall vehicle introductions.

Placement of AC Vents in a 1965 Mustang 4+4 Fastback with Center Console

Friday, January 18th, 2013

It’s never too late to upgrade your classic ride with state-of-the-art air conditioning! We recently received an inquiry from a potential customer who has been the sole owner of a Mustang for almost 50 years and is now looking to add AC to his car.

Bought a Mustang 4+4 Fastback new in 1965 and am now restoring it. It never had AC but has the center console. I do not want to remove it to accommodate the new OE-AC vents. Will the Perfect Fit system allow me to keep the center console? This car has no power steering, the engine pulley has one belt groove, and the fan is the stock fan. I would like to use the stock heater control panel.

Determining the Correct Type and Size of Condenser

Wednesday, December 12th, 2012

This inquiry from a Mustang owner reflects the challenge of constructing an A/C unit with parts from a variety of sources, and of finding parts that need to work with both original and non-original components.

I’m trying to sort out the components for an add-on A/C unit in a 64 F-100. I have a few early Mustang units so that’s what I’m using inside. I will mount a Unicla UP170 compressor low on the passenger side of the engine. I need to determine the proper size condenser for this given that I’ll be using 134a instead of the original R12. I have a 27″ x 16″ opening in the core support, and a non-original crossflow radiator that doesn’t mount like the OEM 64 F-100 unit did. I’d appreciate any input.

A Cable-Free Solution to Updating A/C in Vintage Mustangs

Friday, August 31st, 2012

The A/C market has been moving toward all-electronic control, and this request from a 65 Mustang owner is a good example of that trend. Customers are looking to retrofit their A/C while avoiding the fine-tuning and troubleshooting that cables require.

I need an A/C system for a 1965 Mustang I’m building but do not need the headache of cables. Do you make a solenoid controllable modification? Or do you sell the kit without cable drives?

Happy Birthday Mustang!

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

1964 1/2 MustangInspired by the success of the compact Falcon, Ford saw an opportunity for a lower-priced, small, performance car and on April 17, 1964 introduced the Mustang.  Please join us in wishing this American classic a happy 48th birthday.

The spring introduction meant there was less competition from the usual fall vehicle introductions and is why the first Mustangs are technically referred to as 1964 1/2.  The Mustang was an instant hit and with over a million sold in the 1st 24 months, this iconic classic still holds the record for most successful new car introduction.  The compact, sporty, long hood-short deck design of the original Mustangs is an American classic.  The Mustang is the only car Tiffany & Co ever honored with is Award for Excellence in American Design.  Although the inline 6 was standard, almost 3/4′s of the buyers opted for one of the V8 upgrades.

Factory Air conditioning was not available on the 1964-66 Mustangs, although a dealer installed under dash system similar to Classic Auto Air’s “Daily Driver”™ was available. (more…)

Stump the Standard Catalog: 64 1/2 Mustang “GT Package”

Standard Catalog of American Cars - 1946-75This post is for our Mustang fans.

Question….

Was the “GT Package” (distinguished most easily by fog lights and thru-exhaust) available on 1964 1/2 Mustangs?
The Standard Catalog of American Cars: 1946 – 1975 suggests the GT Package made its debut in the 1965 model year.  Despite this, we sometimes see 1964 1/2 Mustangs featuring both fog lights and thru-exhaust.  We’ve even seen some that have only one of the two features!  We wondered…could the Standard Catalog be wrong?  Was the GT Package in fact also available for 1964 1/2 Mustangs?  We guessed so but were never sure.
