Have original AC in your car? Want to upgrade it rather than replace it? This is what inspired Mark Houlahan’s upcoming article in Modified Mustangs& Fords. Check it out. It is a great article (although we’re admittedly biased because we love seeing our stuff in print).
Houlahan’s article details the restoration of a 73 Mach 1 with used and reproduction parts available from Classic Auto Air. The job included a Sanden bolt-on compressor that is reversible, a CAA evaporator core designed for 134a refrigerant, and color coded vacuum hose kit. Once the installation was complete and the Mach 1 was running cool again, it was determined that the slightly modified engine didn’t like running the compressor at slightly lower idle speeds, so a Holley “throttle kicker” was added to increase the idle by several hundred rpm.
For the complete story of the renovation of the Mach 1′s air conditioning system, including pictures showing each step of the restoration/installation, check out the January 2012 edition of Modified Mustangs and Fords. Classic Auto Air carries a complete line of factory original parts and offers restoration services for virtually every model of 1950s-1970′s Ford or Mercury.
