Well, it’s time to do some well-needed upgrades to our Black Beauty. But before we get to our specialty of bringing the interior a whole new level of cool, we decided to focus on the underside. So…. first things first….the brakes. When purchasing the Camaro we knew the brakes were well outdated and in need of replacing, but no worries….our buddies over at Master Power Brakes had us covered. We talked to Kevin over there, and man, can I tell you this guy knows his stuff. Kevin quickly realized that our Camaro didn’t need the biggest baddest brake kit they had, but let’s be honest, bigger is always better, and it helps with the cool factor we are going for. So of course I opted for the complete Big Brake Kit. As I say go big or go home!
When the brakes arrived and we opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was as if I was looking at my newborn daughter all over again for the first time. (Don’t tell my wife, who on a separate note has said this Camaro is the son I have never had!) Those 13” cross-drilled and slotted rotors were looking back at me and I began to grunt like Tim the Tool Man Taylor!!
We immediately began tearing out the old drum brakes and lines to bolt these babies on. While underside of the Camaro we decided to go ahead and change out the suspension and all the bushings. Changing the bushings was quite a job. We had the whole CAA team involved in that project.
With the bushings replaced we were ready to bolt on the Big Brake Kit, and I must say, that was the easiest part of our restoration so far. We didn’t even need instructions. With all the brakes rotors and calipers bolted up, all we have left is the new brake booster supplied in our kit. We will leave that for when we tackle the engine compartment. Now we are ready to take dimensions and get some killer new wheels that will accent our beauty and show off our new brakes. Any ideas?
