Typical Problems Encountered In Charging Systems


As hard as it is to believe most problems are not faulty parts but are user error. This is common in automotive installations. No reason to beat your self up it happens, but if we take the time to learn more we can avoid problems down the road. Remember it is ALWAYS a good idea to bench test (when possible) any product before it goes into your vehicle. Retrofitting R12 to R134a by Classic Auto Air

R12 to R134a

With the phase-out of R12 (1st January 1996) many compromises have to retrofit to R134a. No direct “drop-in” replacement is available, even alternatives such as ternary blends require the replacement of components such as “O” rings on some systems, filter dryers or accumulators.

System lubrication:

Majority of automotive manufacturers recommending PAG (Poly Alkaline Glycol) oil as the only oil replacement when retrofitting R12 automotive A/C systems to operate on R134a refrigerant. Ariazone also recommends POA oil which is fully synthetic oil and suitable for all compressors + refrigerant R12 and R134a.


The cost will be a very important issue if an R134a retrofit is to be undertaken, but do not sacrifice performance and reliability for the sake of cost. As further documented there will be slight temperature and pressure increases within the system. This will all depend on how the A/C system originally performed on R12 if the performance was marginal on R12 a retrofit to R134a will not improve that performance.

Normally made of aluminum the condenser plays an important role in your vehicles A/C system. So what does it do? The condenser is a heat exchanger. The refrigerant passes through the condenser and it releases the heat to the atmosphere.

The heat the refrigerant absorbed while it was flowing through the evaporator enters the condenser as a high-pressure vapor and makes its way through series of tubes with fins around it to expel this heat. After the refrigerant flows through these series of tubes in the condenser and cools, it turns back into a cooled high-pressure liquid

I just installed my new rotary compressor using the York to Sanden compressor & u-shaped idler adapter brackets you supply in your kit. I attached the adapter bracket to the mount and tightened the compressor to the adapter bracket, then tried to install the u-shaped idler adapter bracket. I could not seem to line up the mount holes on the stock idler bracket to the new compressor. What am I doing wrong or do I have the wrong adapter mount?
