Here at CAA, we love almost everything about old cars….the way they look, the way they sound when they fire up, and what they say about the bygone era when the muscle car was truly the king of the road. One thing that isn’t always so good about older muscle cars and vintage classics is climate control. We see it all the time…in some instances, years of wear and tear mean that the originally installed factory AC just isn’t up to the job anymore. In other cases, the AC was never all that efficient, to begin with. Then again, if our customers didn’t love classic cars that often feature climate control issues, none of us would have a gig here.

Our passion for older cars means we do a lot of things to stay in the loop. We surf the web looking for stories and information on classic cars, and we get most of the trade magazines too. An article in a recent edition of Mustang Monthly caught our attention. Why? You guessed it…another story about a classic muscle car that needed updated AC. Turns out the car’s restoration included one of our Perfect Fit AC systems, and we received a small mention in the story. Imagine that! Getting written up in Mustang Monthly, even when it is just a passing mention, is pretty cool (pardon the pun)! The story goes something like this…

Ed Schmidt’s first new car after graduating from college was a 1967 Mustang GT Fastback. He put it in storage in 1978. Schmidt recently decided to have his Fastback restored and updated by Lonny and Jason Childress at Gateway Classic Mustang. Originally, the original goal was to make this 1967 Mustang “drive like a modern car but look like an original.” The Mustang GT Fastback handling and drivability were improved with a Gateway front-end suspension and rack-and-pinion steering.

A quest for better road manners eventually led to a full restoration that would make Schmidt’s Fastback even more fun to drive. All this restoration work sounded great, but the part of the story that caught our attention was the Classic Auto Air Perfect Fit Air Conditioning system the Gateway boys installed on Ed’s car. There is something about seeing your company’s name and products in print that never gets old…..

To learn more about this faster, more maneuverable, classic muscle car, check out the January 2011 issue of Mustang Monthly. Even though Ed’s Perfect Fit Air Conditioning System was professionally installed, it is easy enough to do it yourself. Want to learn more about air conditioning for your classic car?
